You probably can tell – but in this session I was experimenting with low light, narrow depth of field, and tight spaces. I wasn’t as close as it may seem – a lot of these were shot with my telephoto or 50mm. Tight spaces and a narrow depth of field are special challenges in low light. Manual focus is hard to manage in low light unless there are some clean hard edges in the area you are focusing. Automatic focusing also uses contrast to find a focal point, but in cameras like mine, you can control where the focus system hunts for a focus point. Bands are full of movement, so capturing the image means triggering the shutter immediately when focus is found. The photos in this series often include stands – that have nice shiny pipes – and symbols that the focus system loves to grab for a focal point. And if you are shooting through pipes, drums and drumsticks – scenes become especially challenging. But sometimes, those challenges can produce something interesting – as seen in “The Strike.”
