I really wanted to visit one of the outlying pueblos in Michoacan this year for La Día de los Muertos. But I didn’t have hotel reservations anywhere and with no way to get back in the late hours – except perhaps for a very late and expensive taxi, it just wasn’t a good idea. I shouldn’t have worried, I got more than enough photos near my home in Centro. Perhaps next year.

The celebrations were certainly wider this year in Morelia. A lot of activities were planned by the schools and carried out with a lot of dedication by the young people in our city. In these photos and other sets to come – you will see a lot of use of “repurposed” items to make costumes and altars. It is important you understand it is not out of a wish to save money. It is part of the feeling behind the commemoration of the day itself. Everything has a cycle, including human existence, and everything has an afterlife.  I was amazed at the creativity and adherence to the principles everyone was a part of.

I started taking photos in the late afternoon and went on through the evening. I didn’t get to everything, not even close. I didn’t expect to. I captured what I saw happening in the space of a few blocks around where I live. It is enough.
