Dancing like riding a horse

Hollow eyes riding toward you

This was a great concert at the Teatro Stella Inda, in Morelia. The opening act was a local group, Sonaxa. I know many of the members of the group and their work is very good. They had a dancer doing rhythm whose work reminded me very much of riding a horse. It wasn’t easy to get good photos of the group because of the lighting, but he was right in front and a highlight besides.

Son de Madera is a nationally recognized group playing Son Jarocho – a type of music with roots in Veracruz. Son is played on an improvisational style similar to jazz in that the group plays a theme and then improvises on the that. The beat, tuning and instruments are different in many ways from the European/Western standard, but the result is very strong and exciting. If you haven’t heard Son Jarocho – this group is the one to hear.

There were far too many photos for one posting so this one is divided into two – the second one will be tomorrow. I love this group, and the second set is even stronger.
