I was invited to Barra de Navidad, a beach town and resort in the state of Jalisco, to visit with friends at their hotel there. Summer is not the usual time for going to the beaches of Mexico – it’s hot, humid and slow during the summer – but it is a good time to see the area without crowds of tourists. Tourists generally don’t want to sweat and suffer in the heat, even when there is a whole ocean to cool off with.
Barra is a laid-back, rustic town, without much pretension or false luxury. When you go, you do so to avoid fancy dinners, expensive tours, and packaged experiences. You just let it all go and be yourself. There is plenty to do and see, but no one telling you should do anything more than lay on the beach, play in the water and have another beer. And honestly, there’s nothing wrong with that.
Gorgeous place! And just 230 KM south of Puerto Vallarta. I wonder what the drive is like.
I’m not sure. I came in from Guadalajara on the bus and that was a long trip because the route they take goes down to Manzanillo and then North to Barra. I can say that from Morelia it took an entire day to get there and two bus lines.
