Believe me when I say that 10:45 am on a Sunday morning is not a particularly good time to go for breakfast in Mexico. Yes, the hotels and big places are open, but it still too early for most of the smaller, more unique places you might want for a peaceful, leisurely meal followed by a long but easy walk. It is a family day in Mexico. Many shops won’t open at all. The ones that do open later or are taking the morning to set up for another week.

So, with that in mind, I was happy to find Mercado San Lucas open and serving at that hour. I had a nice spread of four gorditas with fresh orange juice at Flor de Canela and a croissant and cappuccino at Origo. Strictly speaking I didn’t have to go to both places – at Mercado Don Lucas they are happy to bring what you want to you from the select assortment of shops around you – but I was out for a photowalk. Sitting in one place, having people serve you does not make for an interesting walk.

If you find yourself out on a Sunday morning in Morelia – I highly recommend a walk over to Mercado Don Lucas. You will find a quiet, comfortable place to have a small breakfast and because of the pedestrian Sunday policy in Centro Historico, a very relaxing time to take in the morning as you amble along. I wouldn’t suggest going earlier than 10:30 – get that extra hour of sleep! It’s Sunday!

There will be more from this walk tomorrow….
